Republican "clerks" (I guess that is meant to imply low level people with of course no understanding or knowledge by actual higher level republicans such as the Senator whose staffer was first the focus of the investigation, the illustrious Orrin Hatch) allegedly went around security measures on Senate computers for over 18 months to snoop and then distribute Democratic data.
No real revelations in the data itself, Democrats wanted more liberal judges, they, *god* forbid, "consulted with free-speech advocates" (the bastards) on how to achieve these goals. Republican "watchdog" groups which happened to post memos leaked by the "alleged" source (and the reason an investigation was begun, it was a bit suspicious when memos were leaked that had not yet been public anywhere, and they appeared in newspapers) are now calling this use of "free speech advocates" an outrage because it clearly shows the Democrats covort with such special interest groups and those groups guide policy. Apparently these Republican groups that are calling this out dont recognize the irony (uh, they are themselves such special interest groups for the other party).
The whole mess is pretty ridiculous on both sides, the only real problem here is the STEALING of the data (which is deplorable, even if the documents were not secured properly, such technical details as encrypting data Democrats cannot be expected to comprehend or implement, yet Republican Senators and their staff should know better, yeah right eh, and its pretty clear that Senators themselves used the information and that since it went on for so long it is highly likely they were aware of the issue and did not stop it).
