Eclipse 3.0 released

Eclipse 3.0 full release is out. The rev has a bunch of new features and a new style svelte rounded corners look (always the most important feature of your IDE, the look ;). I have been using 3.0 all along before it was final and this new release is very polished.

3.0 has a better editor for Java files that includes collapsing sections, quick hierarchy view, quick outlines, smart insert and type ahead features, spell checking, searching, refactoring, source formatting and so on. 3.0 also has new Java tools such as type filters, method call hierarchy, declaration view, javadoc view and all sorts of stuff. 3.0 also has an entirely new Team Synchronize CVS perspective and improved diff and CVS utilities. New Ant tools , a whole bunch of new debug stuff and just all sorts of goodness. Eclipse is basically just as pimp as any commercial editor (although it does lack J2EE features such as JSP editor, Struts editor, EJB deployment, WAR-EAR builder/deployment and so on, those are available in various plugins though.)

RE: Eclipse 3.0 released

Mozilla 1.7 snuck in there last week or so also. 1.7 final is out.

RE: Eclipse 3.0 released

You know, I really have to say, while Eclipse has some nice stuff in it, I still can't see a reason to switch from Netbeans. Specifically because of the things you mentioned (JSP editor with type-ahead and code hints on TLDs and Struts, more J2EE deployment support, etc). It's just strange because all the Open Source peeps out there seem to be backing Eclipse, but it still doesn't seem as useful for "Getting Shit Done"(tm) as Netbeans for all the hype. It is much better looking though :P

RE: Eclipse 3.0 released

SWT is why I use Eclipse over NetBeans. It just plain outperforms NetBeans by far in terms of user experience performance.

Now its been a while since I picked up NetBeans but back when I did not have a gig of ram to run the pure Java hog that NetBeans was.

Maybe its gotten better but I dont think it will ever catch SWT. (And I dont think Sun will ever employ SWT.)

RE: Eclipse 3.0 released

Well, I will freely admit the RAM requirements are high (taking up about 100MB of RAM right now), but I can run it easily on a 256MB machine. However, if you HAVE the RAM, I don't think the actual performance is that bad. I would, however, be interested to see how much RAM Eclipse would need if it included all the deployment and runtime options of NB.

RE: Eclipse 3.0 released

In my experience, which was a while back with NB, Eclipse is a lot faster than NB and just "feels" like a native app whereas NB was plagued by the standard Java desktop app problems of not looking or feeling native. Its just not even close in terms of UI experience (or at least it wasnt back when I last tried NB).
