I must admit that I dont totally grasp "Inversion of Control" and "Dependency Injection" yet but I am very much trying to as they are the focus of many discussions and projects such as Spring and PicoContainer.
These patterns are elaborated upon by Martin Fowler as Inversion of Control Containers and the Dependency Injection pattern. And in addition PicoContainer has good information about the overall design on their site.
After I "get it" I will elaborate more on whats up with IoC and DI, but just note that in the J2EE world these patterns are very much the buzz right now.

RE: The latest Java pattern craze "Dependency Injection"
DependencyInjection is kind of neat, I guess. Honestly, though, using it seems like a ginormous PITA to me for what most people really need.
I guess what I am really missing is why the hell I need all these little apps to provide for me what, really, JDNI does, and why I need all these crazy things to give me what I get with dynamic proxies.
