EA Sports, Madden 2004, was the best selling game of 2003. It appears the same title will lead the way in 2004. Madden 2005 has just been released and sold 1.3 million units in its first week (at 49.99 a pop, yeah thats right, become a game developer, it might pay off).
Interestingly though, Sega has released NFL 2K5 and for the first time its sort of starting to compete with Madden because its priced at 19.99 (amazing for a new run video game?).

Personally, I think EA has has the greatest scam in the world with their sports lines, though. I mean, they MAYBE overhaul the game engine every 4-5 years -- I think NHL 2004 is still using the same play engine as 1996 -- and just up the graphics a bit and reset the stats. I think $20, the "expansion pack" price for any other game is really much more of a fair price for these running sports games. Though, I really suspect these things are going to go to a subscription model soon.

I agree, and though I like the EA games (I like the sports genre in general) I dont buy the new one every year, like many people. I generally update rosters and such and use one "version" of Madden for 3-4 years (I havent seen 2004 yet, using 2003 still). If they did more of an "update" type pricing, or a subscrip, that would be much better IMHO.
