Booya. Three spammers from NC face very steep penalties in VA (15 year prison terms) for sending what is technically known as a "crapload" of spam to AOL members. In a single day one of the defendants attempted to send almost 8 million spam messages. The defendants used false identities and company names.
I think that 15 years for spam is a bit harsh, but I also admit that I am incensed by spam and that as the prosecutor in this case has stated it is more than just annoying spam when you falsify your identity as such.
The case is in VA where they have some of the toughest spam laws in the nation (thanks to lobbying efforts from AOL which is based there?).
(And since we mentioned AOL - is anyone else rolling on the flooring laughing at the new AOL commercials where their "members" have ideas to "make the Internet better"! I mean sure it works in marketing to dumb people but I have to point out that AOL != Internet, thats just funny.) Defendants Accused of Sending Spam
