Senator Stevens says he can regulate cable and satellite for "indecency"

Here we go again, we have some jackass Senator spouting "decency" and or "values" and such and then coming with great ideas like laws where the government enforces such. This happens so often that they end up as permanent spoofs like Bob Odenkirks "Senator Tankerbell" on Mr. Show (hilarious, but alas should be "banned" ;)).

Why is it so dumb? Well its just not the role of government, especially at a FEDERAL level, and its completely ignorant of what a "free" society means.

Ted Stevens (R-AK) has long been an ass clown, his latest take is that he can control cable and satellite television just the way he does the public airwaves (well he doesnt acknowledge the "public" part, if he understood that he might reconsider his position, and if he understood that he might not be an ass clown, but I digress).

Ole Ted says basically bring it on, and mentions he will take it to the Supreme Court. (I doubt he means that, probably just throwing bones to conservative supporters in Alaska and knows he will never get near private entities such as cable or satellite companies, but that begs the question why are their such stupid constituents that want those type bones.)

What does he want to "control"? He says cable is "indecent" (dont get me started on trying to define that, I love it when legislators dont understand how vague and nebulous the terms they use are, its "evil", its against the "sanctity" and so on). Specifically he says "There has to be some standard of decency".

What he fails to recognize is that there is, yet that standard is personal. Dont fucking like it, lets see here, what should you do, hmmm, DONT FUCKING WATCH IT.

Why is that so hard to understand and why are some people (Stevens) so insecure that they have to control what OTHER people do? (And why do those some people include supposedly educated and intelligent people such as Senators?)

Never ending story, lets ban everything, lets burn books, lets censor this and that, thats whats "wrong" with society and the government has to "fix" it.

You have been fined for using a 4 letter word in a place that can be easily viewed by our delicate children.

Please send a check to your closest FCC office care of the "Social Security Rescue" fund.

Yea, that is what I never understood about the "decency" crap. You nailed it on the head when you said it's a personal standard.

It's pretty arrogant to assume that since something offends YOU, it must offend EVERYONE. Countless examples show that the government sucks at regulating morality, so why even make the attempt? As long as nobody's rights are being violated in the production or distribution of the content (kiddie porn, for example), let the "decency" judgement be made on a person-by-person, family-by-family basis.

So, in other words, right on dude.

RE: Senator Stevens says he can regulate cable and satellite fo

Exactly sir. Its a personal decision. With cable and sattelite better yet than dont watch it, DONT BUY IT.

Thomas Jefferson once had a quote about religion that I think applies equally in a broader sense of morality in general (in terms of "regulating" or forcing it upon citizens):

"But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or
no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."

It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg if you watch G String diaries. Its unfortunate because that show sucks ass and you have wasted an hour, but it doesnt harm me. And anyone who goes on into a broader sense of "harm to society" is full of shit. Individual rights are how we judge things (or should be), it can be argued that there is no "societal" right to anything and that there is no separate entity "society" (at least not one with "rights").

Sure we need better parents, sure we should watch Nova instead of anything on Cinemax (Emmannuelle?) but its not the governments job to FORCE that on anything in a free society.

I bet they force standards of "decency" in Iran and yet we seem to revile that society, its just not freedom anymore. Maybe Ted Stevens would be more at home as R-Tehran than R-Alaska?

And note that a PRIVATE entity, a cable or satellite co, is far different from a pseudo crappy public entity like over the air TV (I dont think that should be "public" personally but the airwaves are allegedly "public", I would rather see the government get the hell out of regulating any broadcast media and allow someone to own a frequency in a certain area, that would take rules of course of some kind but thats the direction I would rather it go).

RE: Senator Stevens says he can regulate cable and satellite fo

I would watch Nova if they had more girl-on-girl action. Now that would be decent!

RE: Senator Stevens says he can regulate cable and satellite fo

right on

RE: Senator Stevens says he can regulate cable and satellite fo

"All that, and tight hot teens tonight on the News Hour. I'm Jim Leher."

You people are sick. Funny as hell, but sick.
