iPod cell phone imminent: NYTimes

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 29 - Apple Computer and Motorola plan to unveil a long-awaited mobile phone and music player next week that will incorporate Apple's iTunes software, a telecommunications industry analyst who has been briefed on the announcement said on Monday.

Apple, Motorola and Cingular declined to confirm or deny the report. But Apple did announce on Monday that it would hold a major news event on Sept. 7 in San Francisco that it indicated was music-related. Apple is routinely tight-lipped about pending product announcements, preferring to make a splash on the day of the event.

An IPod Cellphone Said to Be Imminent

You know, I carry two devices in my hand on the way into and out of the office every day, mobile phone, iPod. I dont have a fancy backpack, dont bring my laptop to work, etc. From car charger/FM trans to office. I am also a current Cingular customer (indifferent about that - but convenient as to this announcement). My 1GB shuffle with car charge/FM trans might just be for sale next week some time. :P

I might be interested in that as well. I've got to do something, I put one of those Alpine adapters in my car so I can control my iPod via the radio and now I never take it out. I need some other form of portable music player, hopefully it will have an email equivalent to my damn Cingular Blackberry.

The whole AAC/M4P support would be a good thing, but -- and even though I just got a new phone -- I have been looking at the Moto E680 for a while now. MP3/MPEG4/RealPlayer support, camera, player controls buttons on the sidebar and a QTopia/Linux based deal that is pretty sweet.

I just wonder if the whole "iTunes Phone" is going to be a blatant cash grab, though. Seems like if you already have the $250+ cell phone/PDA, Apple or Moto could just ship you an M4P player for it and be done with it.

Yeah cost is the thing for me, I am lets say "Frugal" (read: tightass) and I wont plunk down $400-$500 bucks for it ($250 yes). If it has value by combining iPod and phone and having reasonable price (meaning its LESS than just those two products prices added together) then I will go there, else I wont.

Two words: Treo 650. Doesn't have m4p, but that's what JHymn is for. Nearly all the carriers have them now. Hell, the 600 is cheap as hell, now and it does all that stuff, too.

Four more words at the Trea: it aint an iPod

Maybe I am the only one but the reason I like iPods are for the SOFTWARE, the hardware is nice and all but yes I admit lots of other players are also nice. Thing is I cant use iTunes with other players, I love iTunes - hence need iPod. (I know there are a few hoops you can jump throught to work iTunes with other players via an export to a CD and blah blah, dont want to do that shit, want to plug my iPod into iTunes and go.
