Real information from bloggers on the street in NOLA. Jacob Appelbaum and Joel Johnson are in NOLA and getting help from various tech folks to get access and wireless antennas and so on. They have a solar powered backpack and somehow have managed access to get live video and audio broadcast out of the city. Amazing effort.
They are there "helping with communications reconnect efforts and documenting what they witness".
Some very sad and terrifying stuff (on many levels, not just the natural kind - the response and the current state of affairs and so on) in the posts and images and also some great inspiration and hope.

More on this later, but the fact that the cops kept people from walking out of NOLA is unfuckingbelievable to me. It doesn't fucking matter. If you are an American citizen, you can move freely about this country. I mean, that is one of the big "we aren't the soviets" things isn't it? No fucking travel papers?

I think they kept people from moving about IN NOLA, rather than from walking out. But still yeah, incredible.
Also it seems from their posts its often not even real "cops" but rather "Blackwater" mercenaries and such. They have gone so far as to take guns away from private citizens - using their own guns to do it. Pretty crazy stuff.
I know this is an emergency and such, and I admit I am not up to speed on all the laws regarding imposing special circumstances for a locality (martial law, taking away guns, forcing people to leave, forbidding journalists from the area and or from filming certain things - which the military leaders originally did and have since backed off of after a lawsuit from CNN - and so on) but it just seems pretty crazy that the US government, or its "contractors" are doing these things in this or any day and age.
