Understanding SOA: java.net

Java.net has a nice SOA intro/overview article.
Even though I despise when anyone quotes the number of "Google hits" as a guage to the popularity of something I managed to keep reading and the article is, other than that peeve, quite good.
(And it seems to me that message style web services ARE SOA. I understand not all web services are SOA, as not all are loosely coupled - most are request/response - but if they are message style then they can be part of an SOA architecture?)
