Charles Darwin's tortoise Harriet dies

Mr Darwin's intelligently designed tortoise, Harriet, has passed away at the age of 176.

Harriet was reported to have been one of the three tortoises taken by Darwin from the Galapagos in 1835. (There is some dispute about whether or not Harriet was actually Darwin's tortoise, but her age was verified as accurate.)

'Darwin's tortoise' dies, age 176

In a crazy twist of fate Harriet ended up in the care of Steve Irwin in Australia, I think Darwin would have approved.

RE: Charles Darwin's tortoise Harriet dies

Really an amazing story. Just thinking about the fact that she moved to the Australian Botanical Gardens in 1830 before her "final" home at the national zoo in 1860 -- antebellum times -- seems amazing.

The Reuters story also mentioned that she was really good about giving the kids turtle rides around the zoo.
