Google, you morons

All the rumors are true, Google is paying $1.65 billion for YouTube! Personally I felt Mark Cuban was pretty far off when he said "anyone who buys that (YouTube) is a moron". Cubans case was that YouTube is composed of two basic things, copyrighted stuff they obviously cannot sell, and user generated content that nobody will ever want to advertise near. One point one Cuban is right, and YouTube will have to clean up much of that problem. On point two Cuban could not be more wrong. Sure its free bandwidth and thats one reason its popular, but thats not the main thing. The main thing is that that user generated content *is interesting" and people do give a crap about it. Its far more than just "Aunt Jenny watching her niece tap dance". Today Cuban defends his previous stance, albeit with a bit less standoffish language. (Get ready for the phrase "It will be interesting", it seems to lead off every other paragraph in the article.)

RE: Google, you morons

I have been surprised at how well YouTube has been at getting media companies to partner up. I still think the odds of them staying that way long term are less than stellar, but still goes a long way towards disproving Cuban. And really, who doesn't like telling a billionaire he is wrong.

RE: Google, you morons

Honestly I am less interested in the media company deals, something Cuban is now focusing on - as is apparently YouTube and Google. I think the actual original content is itself worth something, without distribution deals to the media companies. Dont get me wrong, being *the* place to distribute media, fancy corporate media, or indepdendent, would be even better, but I think something like YouTube can survive even without the media deals and the corporate content. The future is going to be smaller, independent, copyable/sharable/legal, content entities.
