Science Breakthoughs of the Year

Science Mag recently awarded honors to the 2006 "breakthroughs" of the year. The top prize was awarded for Perelman's proof of the Poincare Conjecture and the runners up are also very impressive.

We discussed Perelman earlier this year when he won the Fields medal.

What is fairly sad now is that Perelman has quit mathematics citing ethical concerns in the community - which is intimated to be a jab at two other mathematicians whom tried to take credit for the work (Cao and Zhu). At present all these characters (and a few more that have done related work or cleaned up some of the Perelman points) are so pissed at each other that in addition to dropping math altogether, in Perelman's case, they have declined appearing together on stage at conferences and such. It is quite a pity that these guys can be this brilliant and not find some way to cooperate and cope with each other.
