Wondering what in the heck is a "Linux" or whats a "Screaming-Penguin"? I thought maybe someone should at least attempt to explain. I realize that most visitors here will be familiar with Linux and familiar with us, but the explanation is for those folks who are a bit bewildered or curious right now.
Screaming-Penguin is a site devoted the free and open source operating system known as Linux, or GNU/Linux and to computing itself. "Jules the Penguin" as he is affectionately known is our beloved mascot and he is only distantly related to the normal Linux mascot, "Tux" (in fact Tuxs family denies his lineage and claims he is illegitimate but the resemblance is unquestionable.)
Linux was developed by an international community of programmers, engineers and users and is indeed a free, stable, robust and adaptable operating system that works on a variety of platforms. Linux is a real alternative to other less than acceptable commercial operating systems. Linux.Org, has a small but concise explanation of what Linux is and how it was created (as well as a plethora of other great resources pertaining to Linux.) Linux.Com also has further general Linux information.
Screaming-Penguin is a site and a state of mind. The Penguin is devoted not only to Linux and related resources such as hardware, software, merchandise, information and news but also to the overall concept of open source software and real solutions. The resources on the penguin include
Resources here will run the gambit from news, forums, funnies, hardware setups, resource recommendations, development + programming resources, help and how-tos from the trenches, standard console applications + X applications that are reviewed and documented and an overall computer related website dedicated all things Linux and open source in general. We think its a great concept and we will continue to work on the Screaming-Penguin site and the Screaming-Penguin persona.
Please feel free to let us know what you think, we are interested in feedback and we rely on the Linux community to keep this effort afloat. All comments and suggestions are always welcome. Webmaster@totsp.com Again, please look around and surf the site, let us know what you think and remember to check back at the Penguin once in awhile because things are happening very quickly and new functionality is added as often as possible.
