Just a quick note to penguin developers interested to state that jPenguin is actually under development now. As I stated a few weeks back it is long overdue, well now its at least in early alpha/eval form (there is code, nothing to provide to other developers yet, but there is code).
I have been working on a data model/DAO/DAL layer using Hibernate. I plan to plug in Spring or annotations to clean up my DAL some, but progress and research is actually occurring ;).
I have not really done any web tier work yet, other than to start to evaluate the frameworks. Its been a few years since I worked with Struts, and while it is a good product and has proved very useful to me in the past, it just *feels* like all that XML config and "Action" based stuff is overkill. I know struts Ti is on the way (the Webwork merge) and they now have the Action or the Shale framework. Yet I do not prefer the Shale/JSF centric stuff (because of my impressions of JSF, whether accurate or not). So I have been looking at Struts, Struts with tiles, tapestry, etc, Spring Webflow, Webworks itself and just recently Stripes.
Honestly from a very prelim review it seems like Stripes and HiberAnnotations may be the way to go.
I am building a jar/command line version of the penguin first, then plan to wrap it in a web framework which will just spit out DIV tags, then finally create some CSS templates for it.
CVS access to anyone who gives a crap should be available soon.
