RedHat Buys Cygnus Solutions

RedHat today annouced a purchase of Cygnus Solutions for USD$674 million. Also they will be replacing Bob Young with Matthew Szulik in the CEO spot. Young will remain on as chairman of the board. This is a big move for RedHat on the road to becoming the prime GNU/Linux distributor and support company. Cygnus, of course, specializes in support and tools for developers in the GNU environmnet. This will very closely complement RedHat\'s burgeoning support network from the engineering/adminstrations realm.Co-founder Bob Young\'s decision to step down from the helm of the operation seems a bit more of a mystery to me.

When asked why Red Hat chose to make the management change now, Paul McNamara, general manager of the company's enterprise business unit, said, "Matthew has effectively been the guiding force behind the scenes for some time. We felt that now was the right time to recognize Matthew's role, since the company is large and mature enough."
I suppose this will more Mr. Young into more of an evangelist type position for RedHat and Linux in general. Geez, like he needs anymore camera time.NY Time Story
