Today, Maylay Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad unveiled phase 1 of the Multimedia Super Corridor, a 5.3 Billion USD project to bring the Malaysian economy into the development arena. Maylasia has, of course, excelled in creating an educated populous and drawing high tech production jobs into the economy. Mahathir Mohamad has been widely criticized for the ambitious nature of the MMSC over the last few years, but this completion opens the door for the creation of a new Silicon Valley style hotbed of development activity. The entire area is wired head to toe with high speed fiber networks, and stretches roughtly 300 square miles-- roughtly the size of New York City. So far, 225 companies have applied to set up shop in the Super Corridor. Among them are 78 foreign firms including giants like Microsoft Corp., Sun Microsystems Inc., Oracle Corp. and Fujitsu Ltd. Kudos to the Maylay government for their staying power in such a forward looking project.
