The Register today has this story discussing new plans for AOL and Gateway to codevelop new AOLAnywhere devices, likely based on Linux OSes. While this is an interesting development, more than anything I suspect that the OS will me mostly irrelevant on these new platforms, where the AOL-Sun alliance is intended to lead to the 100% Pure Java AOL client. Write once, run on the most cost effective OS around.. what would that be? In other news from the Gateway camp, their comarketing agreement with Cobalt, maker of the popular and sexy Qube and RaQ small office/workgroup Linux servers appears to be making a big turn forward with Cobalt changing platforms from MIPS processors to AMD x86 flavors.
