Well, if you have been on the web the last couple of days, you can't miss the buzz about AOL in buyout talks with RedHat. I figured it would have been IBM. :shrug: There are several ways I look at this. AOL is already vested in Linux through Tivo and AOL-TV. I would bet that the AOL for PS2 will be a linux boot disc based on the AOL-TV code, but thats just me. So there are plenty of places outside the desktop for AOL to play here... My question is, if AOL wanted to be in the Enterprise software market why did they sell their share in iPlanet to Sun? Hmmmm... News.com is talking about Windows Desktop Replacement. I LOVE my Linux, but I don't think even a behemoth like AOL can pull that off right now. News.com

Now AOL Linux Cd's filling my mailbox! yeah Tivo is nice worked with a guy in the lab at hughes that used to code on it. (all he used to watch was armed and dangerous), but AOL linux? Most people i know that use Linux call it a Real OS, and they use a Real ISP... not a prepackaged ISP. Or one that can be easily hacked (see if u can find AOHell), spoofed, etc.... AOL is just pushing the monopoly market bigtime, look at AIM, before that there was ICQ, IGN (if i remember right). They even have their own image format, email, and AOL used to use a hacked IE browser as well. Since this M$ monopoly thing started i thought AOL was next. they're borging ISP's now Os's... what next, satellite? Oh yeah that's right that's part of what i worked on at Hughes R&D.... oh well that's my speach i'll get off the soapbox. not sure what i think about this. i think it is great that linux is becoming recognized as viable and redhat is making money and this is even being discussed. but AOL???? that would suck. i am not against a large company doing this entirely, linux could use the infusion and i agree with you that IBM was the player of choice. but AOL??? after the mozilla/netscape fiasco, the proprietary AIM crap, etc, etc, etc, not to mention running the most lame ISP ever (although these guys make money, well maybe, while we call them lame, I recall a story about AOL marketshare being enormous but cash not so great because of all the free users.) i am still not sure about this. i would be very very leary of AOL screwing up the whole thing rather than improving anything and competing with MS. IF they really want to do it right, they will just leave it as is and infuse tons of cash.
