In other console news... Dreamcast. The New Amiga?

Tagged:
Antigames.com has a good story on the (re)birth of the Dreamcast as a hobbist platform. This was the first console I have owned since the Atari 2600, not counting having a roomate with a Sega Genesis/SegaCD in college. It's still a great little box. With the KB, mouse and Ethernet card it makes for a great linux box for the living room, and they were dirt cheap.

Wow, thats cool to read. Dreamcast kicked ass despite its poor reception. Soul Calibur is still an amazing game. I want to put linux on mine now :)

Yeah. I think the only things that kept the DC from owning the market was that (a) they opted for CD-ROM rather than DVD to keep the price down at the time, which was seen as a "negative" and (b) everyone say the PS2 and XBox as being "better", which is a matter of perspective. One thing the DCs PVR2 chip did REALLY well was antialiasing. I remember seeing DOA2 on both platforms and the DC version had less "stuff" by nature of the medium, but it looked *better* because of the AA. I think the real lession from the PS2 and the XBox, though, is that the gaming crowd has "grown up" and really doesn't mind a console breaking that $250 mark, especially if there is a perceived value there.
