From CNN:
"This nation acted to a threat [sic] from the dictator of Iraq," Bush said. "Now there are some who would like to rewrite history -- revisionist historians is what I like to call them.
"Saddam Hussein was a threat to America and the free world in '91, in '98, in 2003. He continually ignored the demands of the free world, so the United States and friends and allies acted."
...snip...
Some Democrats, however, continue to push for public congressional hearings into the matter.
The chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee said Sunday his panel would likely issue a public report and may hold public hearings after a closed review of U.S. intelligence used to build the Bush administration's case for war against Iraq.
Am I the only one it bothers that the (Republican) chairman of the Senate Intelligence [sic] Committee is reviewing the intel AFTER he voted to approve a war?
Part of the reason the framers of our Constitution gave Congress the ability to declare war is because they wanted to prevent the adventurous and wasteful foreign policies that stifled Europe through the age of monarchs. I am still of the opinion that Bush's was in Iraq was more personal grudge than national security ("He tried to kill my daddy."), and exactly the kind of Machiavellian princely affair that our Founding Fathers wanted to prevent. For some reason, our representatives decided to give Bush a blank check, without even seeing what the bill was.
Moreover, as Americans are just starting to realize, this is far from over. A President who denounced "nation building" just 2 years ago is now responsible for the greatest effort in that field since the Marshall plan, and screwing it up badly. Can anyone look at Iraq these months after we have declared victory and say that is is a better place? We took an industrialized, urban nation and reduced it to third world status in 6 week. Maybe things don't seem that bad in Afghanistan, because they were a third world nation before we got there. If you haven't realized it yet, allow me to spell it out for you:
We are going to be in Iraq for 5 years at least. Maybe 10.
I don't think any sane person really thought Iraq posed a clear and imminent danger to the US. Saddam was destined to be the castro of the Middle East. The aftermath, however, is something I think the American people were squarely misled about, and are still being misled about. Our soldiers aren't coming home anytime soon, and if we were going to do this right, we should be sending WAY more. Policing, pacification and protection are much more demanding that selective target elimination.
It is very easy to destroy something. It is very hard to build and protect something
Meanwhile, deposed homophobe and right wing whacko Bob Barr is speaking at the ACLU again the Patriot Act -- the slight of hand legislation the administration slipped through while the American attention was focused on its own fear.
The whole "evidence" shortcomings were spelled out in the press -- not usually the American press -- well before the War started, and most people didn't care. "They attacked us first," the man on the street interviewees spewed on the news. This is why nobody cared.

Re: My rant on the Bush vs. Truth issues...
i totally agree with your points.
iraq was absolutely no threat to the US, they were "contained" just fine and the Castro analogy is apt. and we will be there for a long damn time and people will continue to fight the us "occupation" for a long time. its a horrible mess.
i also had heard reports about the intelligence before the war and REMARKED IN ARTICLES HERE THAT THE US HAD NOT SHOWN ANY EVIDENCE OF ANYTHING.
i also learned before the war (i think it was before) about the false nature of the uranium documents. they were fraudulent and the British government admitted it. what i did NOT KNOW UNTIL NOW THOUGH is the UNITED STATES KNEW THESE WERE FALSE DOCUMENTS ALL ALONG, A YEAR EARLIER IN FACT.
this is not some spin or some bias or whatever and this also has nothing to do your position on the war or the president or policies, etc. this is flat out lying to the American people and the world. if you are a republican, a democrat, an independent, a libertarian, a christian conservative, a cross dressing accountant, or whatever, you should be OUTRAGED at this deceit from the President. its insane.
i usually hate silly ass governmental commissions, congressional inquiries, and the like. they cost tons of money and they usually just waste time and resources. however in this case i hope we do eventually find out whether or not the President knew he was telling lies. also, even if he did not, what kind of picture does that paint of his intelligence and awareness. again, insanity.
