Army Filters TheMemoryHole.com from Servicepeople in Iraq

You might remember TheMemoryHole.com from a few weeks ago as they are the people who got FOIA requests for "flag draped bodily remains trasport tube" pictures filled. Anyway, from Boing Boing (you believe they are still around?)
I've received email from a person with an [army.mil] address. This person is stationed in Iraq, and he/she tells me that The Memory Hole is blocked on military computers. Trying to get to the site results in the following message: Access Denied (content_filter_denied) Your request was denied because of its content categorization: "Extreme;Politics/Religion". For assistance, contact your network support team. How interesting. I post raw documents created by the government, military, and corporations. These days, that apparently amounts to "political extremism." Naturally, I've filed a FOIA request about this blocking.

thats amazing. amazing that they have a damn filter AT ALL. what the hell. we can ask these people to go to war and get killed but we cant let them surf wherever they hell they want (be it political shit, religious shit, porn, whatever). Ridiculous.

Eh, systems designated for 'official work' are filtered here at LSA Anaconda, but the internet café is another story alltogether...

That makes some sense to me, I can understand the "employer" relationship and wanting to filter what is available to work related systems. I would not implement such myself, I would simply only keep around people I liked/trusted to do their work in a responsible manner and require my employees to get their work done and not bother with restricting their behavior. I know there are legal reasons for restricting sites, but the "productivity" reasons I often hear I dont buy. Let your employees (especially your soldiers) do what they want just demand they perform and forget about what they wear, what they surf, who they talk to on the phone and so on. (At least in my experience that makes for happeir and MORE PRODUCTIVE employees.)

Rush Limbaugh is broadcast on American Forces Radio and Television Service (formerly known as Armed Forces Radio) to our troops. I guess he doesn't qualify as extreme.

Dialogue, debate, research and being able to read web-articles, and just as I am doing now writing an opinion are necessary if we are to improve society. There is more to fear when we do not question or openly discuss issues. Not just in Iraq but right here in the US we have some filtering of information. Theresa
