There is a good intro to implementing the Apache Lucene search engine over at TheServerSide today. I have still never touched this directly, but everyone I know who uses it, likes it.
One thing that stood out in my mind, and I guess this is because I have been monkeying with RSS and ATOM so much lately, is how easy it would be to implement a search provider that just indexes feeds. Especially those with full content. Maybe once I get FeedPod stabalized, that would be another good add on for the penguin. Something to let you search back in time on a feed, your feed or all feeds.
In other Lucene news, PyLucene is releasing today. It is a GCJ-compiled binary of Lucene with bindings for Python. I still don't like python, but hey. I Love Lucene
