Don't Call it a Comeback, I've Been Here for Years

Tridgell reminds us over at GrokLaw that:

  1. Samba isn't reverse engineered.
  2. Microsoft didn't invent SMB/CIFS
  3. Samba was never about cloning Microsoft

RE: Don't Call it a Comeback, I've Been Here for Years

Interesting, I actually wasnt aware that SMB was a DEC "Pathworks" protocol that ran on Ultrix and VMS, thats pretty cool.

So what we are saying is that once again Microsoft did not create something they rely on so heavily but rather simply "adopted" it and modified it and then kept the modifications secret in order to prevent interoperation with other systems (when all other companies that have helped with SMB/CIFS have revealed extensions and worked towards and open standard).

Disclaimer: MS is a wonderful company and I just bash them because of my own personal bias which is nonsense and has nothing to do with facts such as this.
