Reads the News == Blame America First

Congressman Asshat... err Cox (R-CA Orange County) busted out with this at CPAC (from salon.com):

"America's Operation Iraqi Freedom is still producing shock and awe, this time among the blame-America-first crowd," he crowed. Then he said, "We continue to discover biological and chemical weapons and facilities to make them inside Iraq." Apparently, most of the hundreds of people in attendance already knew about these remarkable, hitherto-unreported discoveries, because no one gasped at this startling revelation.

RE: Reads the News == Blame America First

Its amazing how many people, much less congresspeople, still BELIEVE we found weapons and that we found evidence of a terrorism link (Abu Nidal in 1979 not actually being a relevant terrorism "link", and "discovering" Saddam "wanted" to have weapons not being the same thing as HAVING said weapons, and I would also point out that NUCLEAR weapons were strongly implied - not just chem/bio - as the "imminent threat" ;)).

I had a discussion just the other day with some folks that were adamant we have found such weapons and terrorism links.

I mentioned UNSCOMB, the ISG, the subsequent 9-11 report and other things in our now two decade or so involvement with Iraq and the question of weapons in my discussion. What I got I think was a great response (one that Rove would be oh so proud of) "well you can 'read' whatever you want and 'look things up' but that doesnt matter"? WTF? Ok, discussion over.

(Side rant, I could go on and on here with examples but suffice to say the administration of George W. Bush has a history of bullshit and will have a legacy of it. The Iraq stories being just a part of the Bush misinformation machinery.)

RE: Reads the News == Blame America First

Thats a good article there sir, the term "proto-fascists" is quite apt. And it provides other gems like this:

"I'm talking at a very protective level about what is important to our society if we are to be a free people," he said. "The less virtue we have in our society, the more the need for government to control our lives, to govern our lives." In other words, government needs to enforce virtue in order to keep government out of our lives.

This argument seemed to make sense to his audience.

Santorum trying to explain to fiscal conservatives (which I consider myself to be, when it comes to government) why they must defend socially conservative policies (xenophobia, ethnocentrism, thats basically the platform of the "social" conservatives).

Thats one of the most amazing things to me about the "Republican party". In the state of the Union for example Bush will proclaim how government needs to be reduced in size (hallelujah, props to Bush!) and get out of the way, and then the next section will be about a ban on gay marriage (wait, WTF? isnt that MORE government)?

I guess I just dont get it, but I see by the article that I am not the only one that recognizes the irony (and apparently the party recognizes it as well or they would not have clowns like Santorum trying to address it ;)).

Bush want a government small enough to fit through the keyhole on your bedroom door :P
