I just can't stand it.

Minirant:

This shit at WaPo is just offensive. You know, if the Living section wants to treat politics like it is fucking Hollywood... whatever. But seriously, why is it only female politicians are subjected to this kind of crap? Now, I remember back in summer 2004 seeing Kerry wearing those stupid pastel ties -- which all the people who give a damn about that kind of thing would tell me were "in" -- and thinking, "Man, nobody wearing a neon pink tie and a yellow suit can be taken seriously."

But why does Condi have to deal with this crap:

As Rice walked out to greet the troops, the coat blew open in a rather swashbuckling way to reveal the top of a pair of knee-high boots. The boots had a high, slender heel that is not particularly practical. But it is a popular silhouette because it tends to elongate and flatter the leg. In short, the boots are sexy.

How about we talk about her gross incompentence at the NSC managing the Iraqi occupation? How about we talk about the fact that she pushed the envelope of lying to congress? Hell, why don't we just hail her as a step forward in equal opportunity? Oh, wait. If it was equal opportunity, she wouldn't have to deal with fluff articles -- flattering or not -- in one of the nation's most prestigious newspapers about what she is wearing today.

RE: I just can't stand it.

shit... was this in a Gloss&Glam / Gossip / Fashion section of the newspaper? Or perhaps in an Op-Ed piece discussing how she was creating a media image? In those contexts, I could cope with it, but in any "news" context it's just bollox.

It's an interesting trend in the Australian media (presumably a 'cold' that we're catching from the US) of blurring facts and opinions to the point where it's hard to discern what really happened. (Did you see "Outfoxed?", 'some may say' that makes the point :)

For right-wing looney columnists, we have our own Andrew Bolt who writes in the Murdoch papers.
