Hollinshead says Quake 4 will come out and play at QuakeCon:
Hollenshead also teased the crowd with information about the upcoming QuakeCon, the annual id-sponsored frag-fest scheduled for this August 11 to 14 in Dallas. Namely, he revealed that the next installment in the conference's titular franchise will indeed be on hand, a fact omitted from last month's official lineup announcement. "We'll have Quake IV multiplayer to play," he said "And because it's also the 10-year anniversary of QuakeCon, we'll have a few other surprises as well."
But before that, the sad sad discussion...
Addressing whether future id games would be written for PCs or consoles, Hollenshead took a pragmatic approach: "Well, that's really more of a financial question than anything else," he said. "Over the past few years, PC game sales have either declined a little bit or stayed relatively flat, while console game sales have seen mostly double-digit growth. I don't know if we'll be releasing multiple SKUs at the same time, but as for PS3 and Xbox 2 and so on, yes, we will continue our development effort on the consoles."
"John [Carmack] has been playing with the tech on the new consoles for a bit now," he added. "I obviously can't talk about that as it's all under [wraps], but I think developing for multiple consoles will happen at id."
Now, I know that the modern consoles are PC-quality... well, 5 year old PC quality... but whatever.
I still can't STAND trying to play a shooter with a console brick though. There is really something to be said for having a seven button mouse and 102 mappable keys on a plastic sheet in front of you. I really do think that the rise of consoles is resulting in a great dumbing down of games, in both complexity and features.

RE: Q4
Yea, I've felt the way you felt for the longest time. I've been keyboard and mouse since the days of Quake multiplayer at TCN. I must say that the XBox controller, properly configured for Halo, is *playable*, but certainly not optimal.
Ohh well...I'm sure some company will make a keyboard and mouse for the XBox 4 just in time for the console-only release of Quake 6.
RE: Q4
Although I suck with a keyboard and mouse it is my preferred way to play. In fact I just sold my XBox on Ebay a few months back. When it came to gaming time the only things I were playing were PC games. Now that might just mean I wasn't devoting enough time to gaming but for me 1000% difference between Halo and Half Life 2.
RE: Q4
You know, though, I do have to wonder. For all Half Life is worlds over Halo and for all people coo about how they managed to get Doom 3 running worth a damned on the XBox, there is a real issue in the PC Game industry with system requirements. A console can sit there for 3 or 4 years and still be playable. Not so with a PC. PC gaming is a much more expensive habit.
Now, however, you have Mac making a very real comeback in the consumer space and "living room PCs" going into the entertainment rack. I suspect pretty soon the PC game industry is going to have to re-think their model or just fold anyway.
Aside from just the "mouse" thing, though, there are a lot of game genres that are still pretty much the exclusive domain of the PC-- RTS, SRPGs, etc all lend themselves to the PC.
RE: Q4
It seems to me that even more than in the past games on the PC are what will drive the consumer sales of new computers (or parts). My general advice to n00bs now when they say they need a pc is to just go to Dell and buy the cheapest thing they can find. In a sense the only situations where that is not true is for games and servers.
