This is all well and good, but are we really going to have to fight through this in each and every application space? It seems to me that things like GMail, Google Maps and Flickr should be raising the bar for all of us who work on the web, not just the space they are in. Software in general needs to push out the applciation space a lot.
The funny thing is, however, the new "AJAX" and Flash/Java/Whatever "RIA" space is really, I think, going to start putting the screws to the legacy ASP and PHP code out there. ASP and PHP got a lot of mileage out of being a lot easier to work with than J2EE, but I suspect they are now about to find out it is much harder to move to a new smarter-client front end as well.
