/. Games links to this story at Next-Gen asking if id has lost all it's prestige because of Doom3..
Now, I look at it differently. Is id ruling the world like it did with Quake3? No. However, you have to look at D3 for what it was, a tribute to the hardcore. Moreover, the shooter market has diversified. There is a world of difference between Counter Strike, UT, Battlefield 2, Ghost Recon and (BTW this looks sweet as hell, the new Monolith game) FEAR, and not to mention the raw marketing dollars Microsoft has thrown behind (what I consider to be the ultimately forgettable) Halo series. I expect Quake 4 will be a more "marketable" game in the sense that Next Gen is talking about than Doom. Doom was an exercise in both self appreciation and an "inside joke". The sheer pointlessness of a statement like:
Maybe I’m crazy, but I recall levels in the original Doom where you were downright encouraged to trick the A.I. into fighting itself. Yes, it was a primitive A.I., but I recall being impressed by it. Hell, even the famed Reaperbot for the original Quake is still 10 times more entertaining than fighting drones in Doom 3
The point of Doom3 was they made Doom... again... with nothing more than Carmacks newest 3D prowess to add to it. This is, it seems to me, like comparing Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back to Chasing Amy. It was a Romp and and inside joke for people who have loved the whole series, not something that was going to turn the world on it's head.
