The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Screw the AJC. Ebert and I agree again: this movie is really, really good.

First off, take a horror movie and mix it with a courtroom drama. It's chocolate and peanut butter -- my two favorite genres mixed in a beautiful way.

Ebert says:

"Demons exist whether you believe in them or not," says the priest at the center of "The Exorcism of Emily Rose." Yes, and you could also say that demons do not exist whether you believe in them or not, because belief by definition stands outside of proof. If you can prove it, you don't need to believe it.

Such truths are at the center of this intriguing and perplexing movie, which is based on the true story of a priest who was accused of murder after a teenage girl died during an exorcism. If the priest is correct and the girl was possessed by a demon, he is innocent. If the authorities called by the prosecution are correct, she died of psychotic epileptic disorder, and the priest created complications leading to her death. If, on the other hand, exorcism theory is correct, drugs given to the girl to treat her "disorder" made her immune to exorcism and led to her death.

This movie manages to make a catholic mysticism horror movie without making any kind of judgement about... well... anything.

All in all this movie is great. I highly recommend it.

RE: The Exorcism of Emily Rose

I havent seen the flick but I think the "true story" its is "based" upon was an apparently very irresponsible episode by the Church in which the priest, so it sounds, did indeed contribute to the girls death.

Overall, even though I havent seen it, the whole marketing hype "true story" bullshit when it comes to an "exorcism" makes me ill. Lets have some exciting and scary and compelling movies that dont focus on the paranormal/relgious/nonsensical. There are plenty of feasible amazing natural phenomenon which we could make a movie or two about (ala Contact, the entire thing need not be true of course, but the premise has to be believable).

It might be a great flick for its pure entertainment value but I have no desire to see it because I cant get past the hyped bullshit premise. (Yeah yeah, its Hollywood, its a movie, so on, but still.)

RE: The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Honestly there is a real point there. The problem with the whole "true story" bit really just revolves around some ancillery scenes that surround the trial. Really if they cut the movie to just what happened in the court room, it would have been better because then there would have been less, umm... Mel Gibsonization and more of a "was she/wasn't she" question.

Honestly I didn't think much about the whole "true story" angle watching it. I just sort of approached it as another horror movie, and on that front, I would call it a very successful outting.

RE: The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Well using that "approach" it makes sense, thats what I meant. I just cant get myself to allow that approach and just enjoy the flick though - I understand it - just cant do it.

RE: The Exorcism of Emily Rose

And maybe that is because I was insulated from the whole TV machine on this one. I just went into the movie with a whole perspective of "it is a horror movie" and not the "true story" aspect. That may very well make a difference.
