RE: VLC 0.8.4-test1 Available
Thats quite cool. I spent a few hours last night recompiling mplayer on my KnoppMyth box - that thing is a pain in the arse. I mean once you get it, its great, but getting it all set with all the codecs and options and so on is not for the faint of heart. I am using VLC on a few other boxes - might try it with Myth.
I think I am at the KnoppMyth saturation point as well. Dont get me wrong, its a great starter Myth project and its great for front ends - boot and go - but I am wanting to add and recompile lots of stuff at this point. Thinking about building an FC4 box my way and then compiling Myth on my own. Will take some time but I might as well really since I am continually tweaking and mucking with KnoppMyth.
RE: VLC 0.8.4-test1 Available
Here are some notes on FC and Myth. The Myth(Tv)ology site is great and will get you there, I could just never get what I deemed acceptable soundcard support out of Linux in general, and ended up going to MCE (since I, uh, just used an MSDN copy :P). I might consider going back to MythTV, but I am starting to think that FrontRow might be the way to go.
RE: VLC 0.8.4-test1 Available
Yeah I have been using the tips and tricks from that wilsonet site even with KnoppMyth. There are lots of aspects of Debian that I like as well, but at this point things are just too stripped down and every time I want to compile or add something I have to do a lot of stuff which would already be there on even just a stock FC4 machine. I realize thats exactly the point of KnoppMyth - its minimal by design, so I am not knocking it, I am just saying I am sort of past that now and want to do more or different sutff with my "backend" machine.
MCE has never been in the picture for me, though all the hardware I have is better supported over there, certainly. I just also want the "I control it" aspect. I want to rip DVDs if I feel like it (actually a smart thing to do if you have kids, they can be rough on discs) - I want to play all formats of everything - I want to launch all sorts of mame and PC games, so on. As well as just watch and record TV and audio. I know other machines can still do these things, but they arent all integrated into the HTPC menu the way Myth is.
Myth is still a ginormous pain in the ass to get working - but once each part falls into place its quite nice. (I still need a new capture card, but I have all my other audio and video - apart from TV - and games working - and my TV is sorta working, just needs a better card.)
RE: VLC 0.8.4-test1 Available
Front Row looks great. MCE looks nice too. Its just that niether will ever have stuff like "Rip DVD" or "Import Audio CD" (where the resulting files are just MP3 with no DRM at all) or "Play SNES games" and so on.
RE: VLC 0.8.4-test1 Available
Hey, I have not got around to a HPTV setup yet, but I always assumed MCE was just a windows box with a TV friendly front end (and other stuff). Can't I rip DVD's on it just like I can do on an XP box?
RE: VLC 0.8.4-test1 Available
You can rip DVDs with SuperDVDRipper or whatever other software you already use. It just doesn't have a friendly "Import" type button akin to iTunes or MusicMatches CD rippers. MythTV has a one-click "Rip DVD" button that is just handy
RE: VLC 0.8.4-test1 Available
BTW, You can use iTunes to just rip a plain old MP3 file.
RE: VLC 0.8.4-test1 Available
Right sirs, I think I said that above, I realize I ultimately CAN do things like rip DVDs and MP3s sans DRM with MCE or with iTunes even (in the case of CD to MP3 - more hoops for FairPlay and PlayFair and so on if you are using iTunes purchased songs - another matter I suppose - but yes I understand the difference), but they arent part of my media software, I have to exit that and run some other third party app, etc.
In MythTV rip a DVD is a button right there in the menu. As is rip MP3.
