Really sad,....but now that there are an increase of Republicans in Senate and Bish
back in office this will most likely go through.
"U.S. Senate Republicans will renew a bid to allow oil drilling in the Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge in Alaska after winning an expanded majority in the Senate and the
re-election of the president.
The measure, a centerpiece of President George W. Bush's national energy policy,
may be introduced in February or March, said Marnie Funk, spokeswoman for
Senator Pete Domenici, chairman of the Senate energy committee. The proposal for
drilling in the refuge, known as ANWR, will be part of a budget measure that needs a
simple majority to succeed."

RE: Republicans to Seek Alaska Refuge Oil Drilling
well that has been on the "agenda" for decades, regardless of admin or majorities, etc. i dont really think its a big deal either way, personally. i mean i do think its stupid to drill there, it was designated a "wildlife REFUGE" (see dictionary republicans), and it does not seem to have that much output potential on a relative scale to what the states need according to various estimates, so it seems silly to drill there. However, that said, even if they do drill there I dont think its all that big of a deal. They wont be crushing reindeer to do the drilling, if they make a few roads, etc, then yes that will affect things but the animals will move and so on, it wont really destroy the ecosystem (as long as the drilling companies are conscious of the environment and make an effort to minimalize the impact, which has not always been true historically).
I think we have bigger and more fundamental issues with this admin than ANWR. We have illegal wars against sovereign countries, we have a profound misunderstanding of many aspects of "science" (evolution, global warming, stem cell research, etc, the jury is not OUT on these things as the repubs often tend to imply, and if its not ignorance then its specious lies), we have a profound ignorance of freedom and things like the separation of church and state and due process. In short we have a shitload of bigger problems than anwr, america responded to an ad campaign elciting national pride and disguising reality and facts, they will likely pay the price.
RE: Republicans to Seek Alaska Refuge Oil Drilling
I think the big problem with this is what they are spending time on. I know this is discussed plenty, and said over and over, but instead of spending so much time trying to get oil somewhere else, try to figure out ways we can avoid needing more oil. I also know the major issue with that is money and power.
RE: Republicans to Seek Alaska Refuge Oil Drilling
agreed. thats what i meant about the size of the reserves relative to what the states uses. if we simply made existing cars 1-2mpg more efficient we would save billions or barrels of oil more than anwr would ever produce. but in the states that does not seem to be a priority for most, last repub congress session did not pass the new CAFE standards and so on. what i was saying is that drilling in anwr is definitely not the answer, but its not ITSELF a huge problem either (IMHO).
RE: Republicans to Seek Alaska Refuge Oil Drilling
I'm not sure why we care more that oil is drilled in Alaska as opposed to Brasil, or some other place with terrain similar to ANWR. I'm not cool with the idea of drilling in such places. I think that Oil drilling, no matter how carefully done, will have an impact on the wildlife there. There is no way around it. If we don't let drilling happen in Alaska, I also think we shouldn't let it happen in other places. This is a global issue, not an American issue.
Can we prevent the need of drilling, or at least the perception of need? hopefully we can.
I remember up until like 1995 vehicles were on track to have better gas mileage. It looked like a new CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy ) standard was attainable. Unfortunately The government folded like a deck of cards to the auto and fuel industries. I understand The same thing is bound to happen again.
We've heard it before, and we'll hear it again. If we can not get rid of the internal combustion engine, then we need to increase the efficiency. With the technology today, we know the engines do run cleaner, but most engines are pushing around vehicles with the aerodynamics of a brick.
Simply put...Automakers were fighting hard to attain the CAFE standards and in 1987 the fleet average was over 26 mpg. The automobile eventually gave way to the SUV... Fast forward to 2000, the fleet average dropped to 24 mpg.
Belive it or not, the 2004 CAFE standard is 20.7 mpg !!!!
(mostly due to the rise in popularity of the SUV (purchased by all walks of life.)
The standard was lowered basically to have the auto makers say "Hey, look our cars a fuel effiecient, we are getting more mpg thatn the CAFE standard requires." What a load of crap! Lets raise the damn standard, and start fining the industry, because they do get fined if they dont meet the standard.
I'm not a fan of Kerry, but he did have good I deas. He initiated a lofty CAFE standard in 2001.
Although the CAFE standard was put into effect in 1975(during republican rule) (the peak of the energy crisis), I still feel the standard is too low. There is a crisis now too... so WTF?
which we should have been striving for since. As long as there is a higher goal for the auto industry, improvements are possible.
As a start, we should all do our part I think by first getting rid of our SUVs (if we own one) And show the automakers what we really want, is something that we need... better cars which follow the lead of the hybrid cars)
Although its just a dream, everyone needs to be united on this issue. The problem affects us all. This is one issue that can solve many ills. Just think, we would finally not have to have be in the Middle East!!! Our troops will come home, the terrorists, insurgents and others can kill themselves.
I can rant and rave pretty good. I'm sorry if the topic took a little bit of a turn, but automobiles are my passion...and I love the old gas guzzlers (which these days only make up a tiny percentage of the automobile population)

Republican ??? yeah :)
