OK, I realize that this isn't exactly on the topic of the bush administrations or any other type of political subject, but as I recall, a long, long time ago, this was the site of some linux-y type stuff, so if that is still not the case, just flame away!!
To begin this little saga, I bought SOCOM: US Navy Seals a couple of weeks ago. It is, IMHO, unfuckingbelievably hellacool. Awesome game. Graphics, gameplay, missions. All cool as hell. Then I realize that this is one of Sony's first forays into the online gaming biz. So I start reading up and realize that I really wanna play this online stuff. Only to find out that Sony only made 100k or so of the network adapters for the PS2 and that they sold out months ago, so I am SOL. They're going on ebay for 2.5x cost or about $75 bucks.
Then I read that the network adapter that came with the ps2linux stuff would work with SOCOM. Hmmmm. I had wondered about playing with linux on PS2, but a) they sold out and b) I couldn't justify the $200. And for those that don't know me well, it is soooooo very easy for me to justify $200.
Well, the justification gears got a turning and on one insomniatic night around 0200 local, I went ahead and ordered the thing. It has just arrived and I am installing Linux as we speak. Should be a blast. I might even look at trying my hand at some stupid game. If nothing else, it should be a fun toy. Will definately being playing online SOCOM!!!
Hoo-yah!
Stay tuned for my zany antics with PS2 and Linux. ps2linux

Re: PS2 Linux
Hey, I was checking that out, and while I have seen the PS2 Linux stuff for a while, I never notices this. It lists a 40GB **INTERNAL** HD for the PS2... Does that bitch actually have a drive bay and controller in it and they just didn't put one in there? How whack is that?
Re: PS2 Linux
you bastard, you couldnt even bash somebody, anybody in your post? what the hell is that?
anyway, sounds cool as hell, i want one of them damn things but i cant justify (or rather dont have) the 200 bucks to buy the kit much less the 200 bucks to buy the base.
have fun you spoiled bastard.
Re: PS2 Linux
yep. it's gotta bay in the back. you slide the HDD in the bay, then attach the nic to the hdd IDE port and power supply, then the nic has some sort of non-standard (to me) plug that brings it all together. Just got it booted on my bigscreen. oh yeah.
making a cable now to get networking up, then its off to the races.
Re: PS2 Linux
Posting from my PS2. w00t!
Re: PS2 Linux
r0xx0r...
One thing I can say, is you now have the best possible living room MP3 player you can't think of. That's about all I use my dreamcast for now, but the DCLinux does a hell of a job at it :)
Re: PS2 Linux
holy crap, thats cool as hell. that was fast, now i might have to find the 200 bucks plus, this credit card thing still has some room on it.
Re: PS2 Linux
nah, I won't give up my games. I don't play many PC based games, but I enjoy a good FPS. I just got Robotech, Medal of Honor and SOCOM. I'll be good for a couple of months. Then Red Faction II will be out.
Dunno how much use I will get out of the ps2linux thingy, but I would like to play around with coding for the PS2. I found today that they have a cross-compiler prebuilt for it so you can build on an x86 and deploy to the MIPS PS2.
Anyway, I have a lot of reading to do. Not to mention online SOCOM.
Re: PS2 Linux
Yeah, I have been eyeballing the Robotech game. I have a feeling that may be the game that pushes me over the edge in getting a console again.
Re: PS2 Linux
Oh my Gawd!!! Cooper doesn't own a PS2? What is this world coming to. For some reason I'm humming... "He sold his soul to the company store......"
Re: PS2 Linux
Just played puckman via xmame on my bigscreen powered my ps2linux box. how wack izat?
Re: PS2 Linux
You don't need the special (sold out) PS2 Ethernet Adapter. I use the 3Com USB to Ethernet adapter and it worked just as well. No drivers, no nothing. Plug and play at 1/2 the price of Sony's official offering.
You can pick up one at 9thtee.com (they use 'em for the TiVo).
Re: PS2 Linux
