So lets say that someone you knew needed to catch up on the java world after being absent for a year or so. What would you instruct him to look at, read, explore to see what was new and cool? Not only with stuff like J2SE5 or whatever the hell it is called, but apps, projects, technologies, etc.

Though none of this really would be new within the last year, this is actually a pretty fundamental list, all stuff you probably are at least remotely familiar with.
I was out of machine reach Thurs (aft) and Fri, and this weekend dont have much time. I will think about this some more and post some more stuff when I get a chance.
And am sure other fanboys will chime in at some point.
