In one of the bigger advances to hit disk drives in years, the Serial ATA Working group has published a draft of the 1.0 Serial ATA specifications. Here are some of the cool things about Serial ATA drives...
- up to 150MBs transfer speed (yikes!!) that can finally keep up with the faster processors
- NO MORE RIBBON CABLE!!!! (make sure to look at the comparison view by clicking the link at the top of the story)
- Faster time to market because of the ability to use an external controller card rather than depending on changes to mother boards, processors, etc.
- Not just for hard drives... think DVD, CD-RW's, etc.
This is really cool. Not only will it help PC's stay cooler (ribbons restrict air flow), but disk drives will finally be able to keep up.
