Largest windfarm planned...

The world's largest windfarm, consisting of 450 large wind turbines, will supply enough electricity for over 70,000 homes in the Northwest portion of the US. Here are some highlights:

  • Being built by a major utility corp -- this will be the first buy-in to windpower by a major supplier.
  • Each turbine will monitor itself and adjust its blade angle and direction to optimize electric output.
  • They will use larger, slower moving blades than the typical wind turbines. The current fast-moving blades act like a bird Cuisinart. I also think this will help to lessen the noise pollution caused by the current turbines.

Wind energy is great... if you can find an area with a consistent breeze of 6+ mph then you have a prime spot for it. Plus, the ground area can still be utilized for crops/grazing, etc because of the small base footprint of the turbines.

Let's hope to see more stuff like this in the future!   Read the MSNBC story...
