Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And when you look long into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you.
This New York Times exclusive says that Slammer dropped Micrsoft to its knees, because they ignored their own advice and didn't apply the patches.
I wonder if the patches really work? N. Y. Times - Microsoft
As someone who normally comes down on the 'give em a break' side I was actually logging on to post this quote:
Microsoft said the damage caused by the "SQL Slammer" worm over the weekend, which targeted the company's corporate database program of the same name, showed it was on the right track with its "Trustworthy Computing" initiative, launched a year and one week earlier by Chairman and founder Bill Gates
from here
I actually laughed out loud when I read that. So much for my defense of 'at least they don't really try to marketing spin it'.....
well, I am glad there is effort to do something about all the problems. i dont hate them just to hate, i used to use microsoft stuff exclusively until i couldnt keep up with the number of patches and the severity of issues.
for an INTRANET, i think its great, for a desktop its great, but on a public network its a risk i dont think is worth the ease of use (which is its clear advantage).
anyway, somewhere in the mix of hype and focus and hate i hope things actually DO get better for microsoft and security. i dont hold my breath or anything, but i hope.

Re: Microsoft ignores own advice, servers crash!
Wow, LOL, that is bad news. I may be one to slam Microsoft but again, I think they earned it.
