Gateway service people dont know jack...

ok, i got a gateway laptop, i like gateway, only brand i use for out-of-the-box computers, theyre decent and dont give me to much trouble. well 'c' the key on my keboard came off, the skin of my finger caught the top of the key and popped it, off but i couldnt put it back on. so i call gateway service people and ask them to send me a new keyboard for me to install. ok no problem, then the service person asked if i needed anything else, and i say, "o yea my red hat isnt detecting my wifi card, which is installed inside my computer, its not an external one"(these people are trained for hardware and software help mind you), and she says "whats red hat?" and i say, "o its a linux distro" then she say, "whats a linux" i say, "its an OS" she replies, "OS?" i say, "operating system" and she asks "o you mean like windows?"

my reply: "..."

ok...i didnt really expect her to know how to get my red hat to work with my wifi...but whats wrong with the world when a computer help person doesnt know what an OS is, let alone red hat or linux...sheesh

RE: Gateway service people dont know jack...

This is part of the problem of a monoculture. Without being a booster for any particular system -- Monopolies are wrong. Competition creates flexible minds and inovation.

The USA should not support Monopolies at its own expense. It should investigate its treatment of Microsoft.

RE: Gateway service people dont know jack...

The problem is that Gateway, and many other companies, seem to be spending less and less on "service" and "support" and never really properly funded it to begin with.

This is a pathetic example of a support line (especially for a company that does/has provided Linux as an optional OS with its hardware). Yet even so you cant really fault the $8.00 and hour phone monkey or the "training" they recieve. The fault is that the company doesnt invest enough in support, period.

And while I did not even come close to understanding what the hell the "monoculture" statement above is about the problem is rampant in the states. Service is dead.

RE: Gateway service people dont know jack...

Hey don't say things like 'service is dead'. What about all the people in India who work in service jobs everyday? :P
