Wondering what in the heck a "Screaming-Penguin" is, or what is "Linux"? Most visitors here will be familiar with Linux and familiar with the TotSP concept, but this explanation is for those who are a bit bewildered or curious right now.
Screaming-Penguin.com is a site that was originally devoted to the free and open source operating system known as Linux, or GNU/Linux and to computing itself. In the days when TotSP was first founded (1997) it was a strong Linux advocacy site. Since then Linux itself has matured a great deal and been widely adopted. Thus the need for general Linux advocacy, Linux commentary and explanation of Linux itself has waned (we no longer need to explain something that is basically now ubiquitous in the computing world).
Since its inception Screaming-Penguin.com has evolved into a "multi-personality" type weblog with a focus on technology and technology related developments, open source software in general, open collaboration, specific software projects and all sorts of tangents such as science, politics, humor and anything else that entertains the contributors.
There are still many Linux advocates and Linux stories on Screaming-Penguin.com (those are our roots) but the amount of Linux related material is no longer dominant. Technology and open source software in general is now a more common topic.
Linux was developed by an international community of programmers, engineers and users and is indeed a free, stable, robust and adaptable operating system that works on a variety of platforms. Linux is a real alternative to other less than acceptable commercial operating systems. Linux.Org, has a small but concise explanation of what Linux is and how it was created (as well as a plethora of other great resources pertaining to Linux.) And Linux.Com also has further general Linux information.
