We have had this thing a month or so now, what do the people (yes both of them), think about the new penguin? Good, bad, indifferent?
I like most of it, but honestly I miss the custom sources RSS thing. I thought I would just switch over to an outside RSS reader and be done with it, but honestly those are not quite working out. I used to hit TotSP and there are my sources as soon as the page loads (it did not have to go out and get the sources, since that was done in the background in another thread). Lately I have been using Google Reader, which is beautiful, but it is pretty slow. This could be mitigated I suppose with a different off line reader, but I really liked the "on the web here it is" list, and the immediacy.
That and I sort of miss a more involved comments view, most comments, most recent, so on.
(And there are a ton of advantages to the new setup, sure, I am just noting here what I find lacking.)

I like it... I'd kinda gotten to where I'd only use the custom RSS reader about half of the times that I was in search of such things... I'd replicated those sources in other apps/sites until the penguin wasn't the one true source anymore.
I'm not crazy about the organization of stuff.... I get lost trying to use the bread crumbs and one time I was looking for the "linux" articles (or something) similar and I couldn't find where I could specify the tag that I was looking for, so that could use some work.
I did like your comments views, but the little chatter window over there -> does me ok.
I actively like the blog and each individual story page as well as some of the "metadata" that is captured (views, etc)
I've not played around with the admin or anything, so I couldn't really tell you too much about that.
Oh, and I love the cookies or whatever the hell it is that means that I don't have to worry about typing long, ranting, incoherent responses and losing them :)
Use Reader and send me your
Use Reader and send me your "shared" feed please. http://www.google.com/reader
That goes for Sticks and anyone else interested. Here is the deal, even though Reader seems a bit slow to me at times, it is a heckofa nice RSS reader overall. What interests me even more than having a bunch of random feeds to read myself though, is what catches YOUR eye. So if you get yourself setup with Reader, and then just click the "Share" thing while you are perusing your feeds (if you find anything share-worthy) - and give me your shared feed - then we will have a consolidated view of "interesting stuff" here in the "News aggregator" area.
Send the shared feeds my direction, please.
Not a fan I'm afraid, awful
Not a fan I'm afraid, awful infact. Is there a way to have it look close in structure to the way it was? As for accounts, I seem to remember that you said anyone who "posted 10 times" had their account re-created. If true then I assume I'm the one of the few long time lurkers here that lost out, but I guess your new hit rates will tell you if I was alone or not. If they are the same I certainly wouldn't be changing anything on my account, plenty of other sites around, but thanks for the work on the previous site.
I want the negative
I want the negative feedback, so I appreciate the note. But honestly I am not sure what "close in structure" means?, and I do not pay very close attention to hit counts, I just listen to what people are saying on the site. So if you think something should be different, please explain, I don't really want to alienate anyone, but I will have no idea unless I hear it.
As for the "posted 10 times" thing, that was really just to get content migrated over, all the content for people with under ten posts was also moved, but just lumped in together. You did not lose anything though if I did not migrate your account over, we basically all just created new accounts on the new setup, even me - and then I associated posts with the new accounts (so if you did not have any posts, you did not lose anything?).
And that sort of goes to what I think, and I guess hope, is the important part of TotSP, the content. We really don't have anything new, feeds, quotes, and so on, other than the original content. I think a lot of that content looks better in this format, but I do miss the old news sources.
Guess I could write a Drupal user customizable RSS reader (if one does not already exist) ;).
thumbs down :(
I can't tell you exactly why, but I'm visiting the new penguin a lot less than the old one.
I've noticed that the layout doesn't work as well under FF2 as the old site -- images in the middle panel tend to go over the top of the content of the right panel.
I miss the other rss feeds that you used to have -- I had feeds there that I never would subscribe to but enjoyed having a glance at occasionally.
I also have a feeling that the sorts of things that you have been posting have changed. Just a feeling.... I'm thinking that there's lots more gossip and giggle and less of the hard nosed ranting that we've all come to love.
But it's all just a feeling... no idea how or why I get it.
Fair points, all of them.
Fair points, all of them. Appreciate the feedback.
I have not noticed any Firefox issues personally but on specific pages I guess the content could bleed into the fixed sidebars (what pages have you noticed this? what platform - I use FF on the Mac and have noticed this once or twice but fixed those pages). As for the RSS feeds, yeah, I miss them too - I just dont use an external "reader" as much as I thought I would (old habit I guess). I am going to work on putting them back somehow (if I have to write my own Drupal module, so be it).
As to the content being a bit more fluff, I agree. Part of that though is not the format, but just that we have been ultra busy with the damn book - and part of it is that posting full on HTML actually works so people can link videos and so on (I do not typically do that, but others do).
The rants will certainly be back when we have time to focus our rage ;).
I think the overall "solution" to this though is going to be some kind of a conglomerate. We really needed to modernize the TotSP code (which I wrote most of back in 98 or so the first round), so that we could have Technorati pings, trackbacks, better input format handling, just overall be more modern and modular - but at the same time we do not want to alienate existing users nor lose anything that was already good about TotSP.
So, though I do not have time at the moment, look for more changes to try to accommodate this stuff when the time becomes available, though I do not think we will be going back to the old code.
I now see the FF issue more
I now see the FF issue more clearly. I used web dev to set my screen size to 800x600 and 1024x768, and yeah, it screws up a lot of content. In the old penguin I went to real pains to make sure EVERYthing resized. Here it looks like we are dealing with some fixed width old content that Drupal cannot resize (or something along those lines, have not looked into it further - placing it on the TODO list).
ID/Password
Not sure what the email address is/was on my old account... but if you could set it to cybrhippy (at) thesmokinglounge.net would be cool and I can reset my password from there.

Thank you :)
I love it
I think it's great:) Good job guys:)
Overall thumbs up
Sorry for the late reply to this - just got back from my ski trip in France :P
I like the new look, although like others I miss the quick glance at certain feeds that I only really viewed from the old TOSP (like Ars). I'm actively using Google Reader so I suppose I could add it there, it just sort of fit with my TOSP viewing. For sites that are a curiosity it is nice to have the most recent items just scrolling through - if it catches my eye I follow the link otherwise it just disappears. GR is a pain for those sites because it ends up showing items as not read - that I really don't care about reading and sure as hell don't want to have to manage (read/unread). Maybe something like that already exists and I just have to find it.
