JavaOne 2007 opening salvo

Sun announced several important things at the JavaOne 2007 opening general session, among them (in no particular order):

  • OpenJDK
  • The open source of Java is complete.

  • JavaFX
  • JavaFX is an RIA platform based on a new scripting language. For more check out www.openjfx.org. (Formerly F3)

  • Sun and Ericsson partnership
  • Strong theme of mobile devices and Java integration, including Sun announcing a partnership with Ericsson to create an open mobile device integration system based on Glassfish. Ericsson will open source some of their stuff, including their SIP implementation.

  • Sun and Sony
  • Partnership and demo of Sony and Sun collaboration. Stuff like the Java features in Blu-Ray. (Insert your own Sony rant here.)

  • Sun and Yahoo collaboration
  • A Yahoo! exec was on hand to demo some new Yahoo mobile services - honestly though what they had was pretty old school looking. More on the theme of mobile devices.

  • Realtime Java
  • New APIs to support realtime Java.

  • Philanthropy, Technology, and Commerce
  • A UN representative was on hand when Jonathan Shwartz and McNeely jointly took the stage to announce support for Engineers without Borders, and other details of Sun's collaboration with the UN to help make educational content on the wire free and open. This was framed as a convergence of priorities, helping provide free educational information to people all over the world - with tangible and impressive projects like Currwiki - and a melding of technology and commerce in a new "ubiquitous" connected world. Once again the them was handheld, battery powered devices, which many more people around the planet use (as opposed to full on pcs).

Details of all of things were a bit sketchy, but hey it was the opening glitz, more info should be forthcoming on all the interwebs.
