I have to say, I am not very pleased with ATT-Cingular lately, and I expected the iPhone to be prohibitively expensive when final prices and rate plans were released . . . so I thought it would not be on my radar at all. Yet, as it turns out it doesn't look that bad.
All the plans have unlimited data and interweb access. The cheap one, $59.99, is only 450 daytime minutes (and 5000 nights and weekends), but that is acceptable (at least for me, I don't talk that much on the mobile during work hours). The data part got me, I figured that would be above and beyond. Hell, I pay $49.99 now for ATT-Cingular with a shitty phone, limited minutes, and no data.
And the phone starts at $499. We already knew that of course, but that's not that bad for a capable smart phone. Couple that with the $59.99 a month and it's really almost compelling. (It's still ATT-Cingular, but, whaddya gonna do, and it's not like another company is any better [that I am aware of anyway].)
So one of you kids needs to run to the Apple store Friday, get in line, try it out, and let me know what you think. Maybe I will buy version 2.0 early next year.

Well, I think this was part of the deal with Apple; they didn't want discounted iPhones to cannibalize the iPod market, so the high price of the phone actually keeps the cost of the service down.
That said, I think the pricing is still fucked for 1 main reason: SMS. The iPhone doesn't include ANY IM software, though I guess you could use Meebo or sonething. Moreover, none of the iPhone plans come with unlimited SMS messages. That seems CRAZY to me. My unlimited data on the Sidekick includes unlimited SMS for $30/mo.
Extra SMS is available
I was originally reading it wrong, but yeah, not having unlimited SMS is a killer (especially if you have machines sending you alerts, etc).

Ugh, I spend about $4 a month on *everything* (text and voice). Either I'm very efficient at what I do or I have no friends, or... :) $60 is a bit much for me. Perhaps if I had a regular handsome income...
