Well, perhaps said papers don't want to have their offices burned down. (with all that paper, it would be a mighty blaze) Of course the uproar over the Danish cartoons didn't occur until about 6 or 7 months after they were originally published, so that should give them enough time to update their sprinkler system.
"Freedom of Speech" is the "Right to Offend". For if said speech doesn't offend it doesn't need to be protected.
