As the always excellent Artima notes that Eric Burke has a OS X and Java Timeline that seems to indicate - if you are willing to glean and speculate - that Java 6 will drop for Leopard relatively soon.
I am going with that. Call it hopeful, blind faith, wishful thinking, whatever you want, but I still have to believe.
And, you can find all kinds of opinions on this matter on the interwebs, including the following:
Apple killed Java altogether, already happened
and
No surprise, Apple doesn't give a crap about developers
Apple will get us there people, relax, be patient. I am holding out hope, but really Apple needs a kick in the shin for not at least announcing what the roadmap is, either way.

The Apple-already-killed-Java-already blog
As the author of the first blog you cite, I want to make sure that everyone understands the story I link to, claiming that Apple has already broken up its Java team, is clearly and obviously bullshit. As I write in my blog, the Create Digital Music blog entry "should be held up as an example of the pathology of posting poorly-sourced nonsense on the web and drawing grandiose conclusions from it."
Apple-killed-Java BS
Yeah, I got that, I wanted to link to your entry, which made it clear the claims were baseless - but maybe I should have titled it better or double linked - sorry.
Now, on the other hand, if I am not allowed, myself, to "post poorly-sourced nonsense on the web and drawing grandiose conclusions from it," then what shall I post? Well sourced, well informed sense, and then draw grandiose conclusions from it? As long as I can still keep my conclusions, I guess I can live with that (but it won't be easy to start finding sources and being well informed, dammit).
