The gPhone is a strategy, not a device

Not exactly as predicted, but Google did reveal a new mobile strategy today. The plan is basically to open source a lot of mobile related software (the Android platform), and commit to the Open Handset Alliance.

The software will reportedly include the OS, which will be Linux based, and a full mobile browser that "can display content from regular Web pages, rather than just the pages specifically customized for mobile gadgets."

Is it gonna be WebKit or Gecko? And, how will this affect the burgeoning Apple/Google relationship - that seems to be going well lately. Is Apple wise enough to jump on and help, or will this just be viewed as headlong competition to the iPhone?
