(Well, while I am on the fantasy track, also the IP laws will change so that rights are crystal clear, and fair use is well defined, and certainly includes making a backup copy - and the patent system will get fixed.) Ripping a CD, one you own, is tantamount to "stealing" a "single copy," per the head of litigation at Sony BMG.
