I was hoping to see the SDK by the end of February, as Apple stated back when. I haven't been following this story, but it just dawned on me today, hey, it's almost the end of Feb, where's my iPhone SDK?!
Apparently this has been big news, but the rumors are that it might be delayed as much as three weeks, and then today it comes out that an SDK event is planned for Mar 6.
That's not too bad, so long as it actually shows up, I am getting a bit tired of the hype. And, not having real third party apps is hurting the iPhone in a big way, IMO. (That coming from one of those "meh, make it a web app with Ajax anyway" kind of clowns, me ;).)
The "event" may or may not be when they reveal the SDK, but it at least promises more info. That is a big one in my book. It's Ok to tell us "hey, we just don't have it ready yet, hold your horses, it's coming," but just don't not tell us at all for months (like Apple is notorious for, this SDK, Java 6 on Leopard, etc).
Also at the event they will apparently push the "enterprise" angle. Don't get me wrong, I think this is a good business move, it matters to the suits to get to Exchange and Notes (whether or not it should is another matter, giant cash sucking parasites that those products are), but I hope we don't hang the SDK on making Notes first out of the gate.
I have used Notes, I have installed Notes servers, I have explained to Notes admins what a DHCP lease and a PTR record are - and I know Notes sucks. It might not be the best thing to showcase the SDK, a lot of other apps might be better, faster, stronger. They still should work on Notes, again, to sell it to the suits, but why does it need to be the fulcrum of the SDK release (let's hope it isn't).
(And while I am rambling, what's with Apple and IBM coming back together. After the PPC move it seems a bit strange. I have heard tell that some Informix stuff will be ready for Leopard soon, and that some IBM version of Lotus Symphony - which is Open Office on Eclipse RCP - is planned too - that and Notes on iPhone? Guess the Apple market share improvements means it's time for the consultants to start showing up "in the enterprise.")
