Guitar shopping

Lately I have been doing some guitar shopping. I have been thinking about getting back into it for a while now, after many years away, and was curious what real musicians might recommend as a good "beginner" guitar.
I have some preferences/prejudices from back in the day (I like Ovation, even though I know some people don't prefer them, I had one years ago and it was solid - I like the price point and idea of the Celebrity), and so have been doing some online research.
Seagull comes up a lot as a recommendation, as does Ibanez, Yamaha, Washburn. and every now and then Ovation.
I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but probably will do so soon. Something else I noticed just today is spurring me on - Garage Band now has lessons, including artist's lessons. Now I may suck at the guitar, and these lessons may never help me, but it's just pretty damn cool to be able to have Sting even *try* to teach you Roxanne, and the like. I haven't jumped at iLife 09 yet either, but this combination might be the catalyst I need (a new guitar AND GarageBand).
